Paul Okotoks Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Professor Paul

My BJJ journey began in 2008 under the instruction of Professor Josh Russell of Gracie Barra, now JR Academy, who is a blackbelt under Carlos Gracie Jr. The moment I stepped onto those mats, I felt as though my ultimate goal, aside from achieving my blackbelt, was to have a martial arts school of my own. That dream became a reality when I opened Okotoks Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2013. Our humble beginings started with only a handful of students, and I was actually fulfilling my dream of teaching Jiu-Jitsu. Little did I realize that beyond only teaching BJJ, I was passing on skills way beyond the mats, to the kids who were coming through our doors. I was empowering them to become confident leaders, to hold their heads up high, and to really believe in themselves. I couldn't be more proud or honored  to pass on my own style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the community I love to the people who have become family.

Crista Okotoks Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Professor Christa

I was first introduced to BJJ in 2011. I loved it right away but after losing my brother to brain cancer in 2012, I was struggling with my loss. I decided to get back on the mats and really see what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu could offer me. Not only did it increase my physical strength and fitness, but also my mental strength. BJJ taught me to be calm under pressure. It forced me to survive when I wasn’t sure I could. It helped me find an inner strength, one I knew was always there. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brought that strength to the forefront, and in September 2021, I was honored to recieve my blackbelt from Professor Paul. I am passionate about passing on this art on to women and children of all ages.
